Recover Deleted Folders/Files from SharePoint
Files and Folders that are deleted in SharePoint are sent to the recycle bin. Items in the recycle bin can be restored up to 93 days after deletion. The Recycling Bin is only accessible through the website.
If a file is manually deleted from the Recycling Bin, it will be sent to a semi-hidden, second-stage recycling bin. Continue Below to learn more.
Access to the Recycle Bin
Every member of the SharePoint site can visit and use the Recycle Bin. Members can restore files, even if they were deleted by someone else.
Members can only see deleted files they had access to before the files were deleted. For example, if a user can’t see the contents of the “Payroll” folder, and one of the “Payroll” folder’s files is deleted, that user will not see the deleted file from the “Payroll” folder in the Recycle Bin.
Site owners can see and restore all files in the Recycle Bin.
SharePoint Website
Navigate to s.uconn.edu/sharepoint and sign in with your UConn email address and NetID password.
Click on your SharePoint site.
Click on Recycle bin in the left column.
Select the folders/files you would like to restore. Click Restore.
You will not be able to see what files are in folders in your recycle bin. You have to restore the folder first, then open the folder to see its contents.
Second Stage Recycling Bin
When items are deleted from the primary Recycle Bin (manually or because 93 days have passed since they were deleted), they go to a second-stage recycle bin, where they can be recovered for another 30 days.
To access this bin, scroll down to the very bottom of your regular Recycling Bin in SharePoint:
You may see the above link briefly, then have more deleted files load. Continue scrolling to reach the absolute bottom of the bin.
You may be able to use a shortcut to access this secondary bin by changing the URL in the address bar of your browser. At the very end of the URL, change view=5 to view=13 as shown below. Note that Microsoft may change this functionality at any time.
