Microsoft SharePoint

What is SharePoint?

Microsoft SharePoint is a cloud file storage service included in UConn’s Microsoft 365 licensing. Students, faculty, and staff can use SharePoint by signing into Microsoft 365. With SharePoint, you can save, share, request, and edit files on any device with an internet connection. When you upload a file to SharePoint it is available to your department.

A VPN is not required to access SharePoint.

When students graduate or when faculty/staff separate from the organization, they will lose access to their SharePoint files.

Students should be sure to download any data they wish to keep before leaving UConn.

Accessing SharePoint

You can access SharePoint on your university and personal computers/devices. You can also access SharePoint through a web browser without the need to install software.

ITS recommends installing the OneDrive application on your devices to have the most seamless experience. When the application is installed, your backed up files will appear within File Explorer (Windows) and Finder (MacOS) just as your non-backed up files do; there is no need to visit the website to access your files.

Both SharePoint and OneDrive use the same OneDrive App on your computer.

When accessing SharePoint through the browser, files will need to be manually downloaded and re-uploaded. Using the browser is recommended when using a public computer (one that you do not own, ex. a friend’s laptop).

Share files

Grant access to files instead of sending the files themselves. Doing so keeps the file in your possession and prevents duplicate copies. When you are done collaborating, revoke access to the files.

Collaborate in Real-Time

When files for Office applications such as Word, PowerPoint, and Excel are saved on SharePoint, you can simultaneously edit documents with others at the same time.
