Working with Letter Grade Schemas

This article is intended for faculty who want to know how to work with letter grades in the HuskyCT Grade Center. Letter grade schemas are used to automatically calculate student letter grades based on a percentage-based grade schema. HuskyCT courses include a default letter grade schema, but instructors can edit existing schemas or create new ones based on their specific grading policies/plans. Letter grade schemas can be used to display letter grades for any Grade Center column and are commonly used to display letter grades for midterm or final grades.

For Ultra Course View, refer to:

Creating or Editing Letter Grade Schemas

Letter Grade Schemas are found in the Manage menu in the Full Grade Center.

  1. Navigate to your Full Grade Center.

    HuskyCT Full Grade Center
  2. From the Manage menu, select Grading Schemas.

Manage menu and Grading Schemas option
  3. The Grading Schemas page will likely have at least one default schema called Letter, Default Letter, or possibly more if others have been added by an instructor. The example below shows a default Letter schema as well as two others.

    1. To create a new Grading Schema, click Create Grading Schema.

    2. To edit an existing schema,

      1. Open the options menu for that schema.

      2. Select Edit.

  4. On either the Create or Edit Grading Schema pages, name or rename the grading schema, if desired.

    1. Adjust the percentage values for each letter grade, as needed. The letter grades can be conventional letter grades (A through F) or any other letter value you would like to display.

    2. Once you have made your modifications to a letter grade schema, click Submit

  5. Once you have created or modified a letter grading schema, you can then set that schema as the display for any grade column. To do so,

    1. Locate the column you would like to edit.

    2. Open its options menu.

    3. Select Edit Column Information.

  6. In the Column Information section, change the Primary Display to the letter grade schema you would like to use.
Note: The Primary Display appears to both the instructor and student views of grades. The Secondary Display only appears to instructors.

  7. Click Submit. Once you do so, your selected letter grade schema will appear in your Grade Center and in your students' My Grades view.

If you intend to push your grades from HuskyCT to Student Admin/PeopleSoft, the letter grade values must be conventional A through F letter grades. While the Grading Schemas feature does allow you to enter different text other than letter grades, your grades will not push successfully if they are not in a format Student Admin recognizes.
