Perusall: Social Annotation Tool

Perusall is a social annotation tool that allows students to engage with course content and their fellow students. Instructors can use Perusall to share readings, create and share reading assignments, and create Collaborate class assignments.

When using the integrated version of Perusall, student accounts are automatically created and grades can be synced from Perusall to HuskyCT.

Assignments in Perusall are graded through a holistic model that focuses on course content engagement.

Getting Started with Perusall

Instructors looking to get started should first add the Perusall tool in HuskyCT and complete the initial course setup in Perusall.

Student accounts are automatically created through the integration with HuskyCT when students first navigate to Perusall through the link in the HuskyCT course.

Instructors should enroll teaching assistants using the Invite tool in Perusall to allow them to manage the course, create content and assignments, and enter grades.

Once the course is created, instructors can then build content in Perusall for their students to engage with.

Assignments in Perusall

Assignments in Perusall are different from HuskyCT assignments in several ways. First, Perusall assignments are designed around a single piece of course content that students are to engage with and annotate. Further, unlike the Assignment tool in HuskyCT, student responses are visible to the other members of the course, as well as the instructors.

Perusall is designed to facilitate a discussion both between the content and the students, but also the students with their peers and the instructor.

Perusall features two main types of assignments. First, regular assignments provide a platform for course-wide engagement with a particular text or piece of content. Second, differentiated assignments provide a way of assigning particular pieces of content to specific students and are built around a folder containing a set of content.
