Troubleshooting Issues with Landline Phones

This article covers some of the most common issues students may have with the landline in their residences hall and offers tips for troubleshooting.

Placing Calls

Check the dialing instructions to ensure that you are dialing correctly.

Receiving Calls

If you are having trouble receiving calls, be sure that the ringer button is on and the ringer volume is turned up.

No Dial Tone

  1. Plug another telephone set into your jack and place your call again. If the call goes through, your telephone set may not be working properly.

  2. Check to make sure that the phone is plugged into the correct jack. (The telephone cord will fit into the Ethernet jack.)

    1. Plug the phone into the white or beige voice jack – not the green or blue data jack.

    2. There may be more than one voice jack in your dorm room, so if one jack does not work, look around for other jacks.

  3. If you have a cordless telephone set, make sure you have a fully charged battery.

Damaged Jacks

If your jack has signs of damage, fill out the Trouble Report Form

Damage caused by apparent tampering and/or vandalism may be billed to room occupants. Subscribers may be held responsible for any repair charges when the malfunction is proven to be in or caused by, the equipment they have provided. Any damage found after the subscribers have left campus may be billed to the room occupants.

If a technician is dispatched for repair and the problem is not related to your telephone service or if no trouble is found, an additional service order fee of $100.00 may be assessed on your next billing statement.

ITS Telecommunications does not provide technical assistance for your personal telephone set.

Voicemail

  1. Make sure that you have requested voicemail service. You can have one voice mailbox per telephone line at no additional cost. Fill out the online Voicemail Form

  2. If you have signed up for voicemail, and it is not working:

    1.  Submit the Voicemail Form again if you did not initialize your mailbox within 2 weeks of ordering voicemail.

  3. If you continue to experience problems or have issues with your password, fill out the Trouble Report Form.
