Setting Up a Voicemail Mailbox

After the mailbox has been built or reset for a new user, faculty and staff can set up their voicemail mailbox. After completing this process, they will be able to access their voicemail mailbox using a 6 digit pin.

PIN Guidelines

The Unity voicemail system checks for trivial PINS (formerly referred to as passwords). When setting a new PIN, you may be told that it is invalid if it meets any of the following attributes:

  • The PIN cannot match the numeric representation of the first or last name of the user.

  • The PIN cannot contain the primary extension or alternate extensions of the user.

  • The PIN cannot contain the reverse of the primary extension or alternate extensions of the user.

  • The PIN cannot contain groups of repeated digits, such as 408408 or 123123.

  • The PIN cannot contain only two different digits, such as 121212.

  • A digit cannot be used more than two times consecutively (e.g., 28883).

  • The PIN cannot be an ascending or descending group of digits (e.g., 012345 or 987654).

If you are told that your new PIN is invalid, you need to choose a PIN with more unique numbers. Some suggestions include:

  • Dates (so long as the date is at least 6 digits and does not contain any repeated digits).

  • Someone else’s phone number (7 or 10 digits).

  • Someone else’s name converted to digits (again, so long as the name is at least 6 digits and does not contain any repeated digits).

  • Patterns on the telephone keypad.

Remember that the telephone voicemail PIN you set is permanent. However, you can manually change it at any time.
