Problems with Windows Product Key & Activation

Your Windows product key is a 25-character code used to activate Windows. You have 30 days to use a valid product key to activate Windows after installation. Once activated, you will be able to access all Windows features from your computer.

Managed Computers

If your device was purchased through UConn and set up by ITS, activation occurs automatically when you connect to the UCONN-SECURE Wi-Fi network. If activation does not occur when you connect to the network, complete the following troubleshooting steps:

  1. Connect to the UConn VPN: https://uconn.atlassian.net/l/cp/iSQDBW1v

  2. Enter the command gpupdate /force into the command prompt.

If activation has still not occurred, contact the Technology Support Center.

Where is my product key?

Managed computers use an enterprise license for Windows, which may supersede the product key printed on a device.

The product key for your copy of Windows is displayed in a sticker similar to the one shown in the image below.

Windows product key sticker

Look for the product key sticker:

  • On your computer

  • In the battery compartment of your computer

  • On the installation disc holder inside the Windows package

If your product key sticker is not in any of the listed locations, you may need to purchase a new key at UConn on the Hub.

Why is my product key invalid?

There are a few reasons why a product key might not be valid.

  • You mistyped your product key.

  • The key you typed does not match the key assigned to your copy of Windows.

If you are sure that your product key is typed correctly, you may need to purchase a new key at UConn on the Hub.
