Troubleshooting Type-C Monitors

A few issues may arise for those using external Type-C monitors in a daisy-chain configuration. Faculty, students, and staff can troubleshoot and resolve these issues.

The multiple cables that go between the monitor, wall, and PC may be somewhat confusing. To simplify troubleshooting, you may find it helpful to unplug the regular USB cables (blue inserts) if you have any before proceeding.

Verifying that Inputs and Outputs are Correct

A "Daisy-Chain" cable is one that connects two or more devices directly, without tracing back to the computer. Daisy-Chain monitors are very specific about the ports. You should ensure that your setup meets the following requirements:

  • The USB-C cable must run from the laptop to the first monitor's INPUT marked USB Type-C.

  • The Daisy-Chain cable must run from the first monitor's OUTPUT marked DP OUT and travel to the second monitor's INPUT marked DP IN.

Verifying that Both Monitors are the Same

If one of the monitors is different or older, daisy-chaining may not work. Connect this different/older monitor at the end of the chain; the last monitor in the chain does not need to support Daisy-Chaining.

Swapping Monitor 1 and 2

Follow these steps only if you want to move cables around for the sake of organization. If you simply wish to switch your monitor's roles, you may do so within Windows and set your Primary and Secondary monitors roles.

  1. Unplug both the USB and DisplayPort cables.

  2. Plug the laptop into the desired monitor's INPUT marked USB Type-C.

  3. The Daisy-Chain cable must run from the first monitor's OUTPUT marked DP OUT and travel to the second monitor's INPUT marked DP IN.

Swapping Monitor Roles (Primary and Secondary)

  1. On your laptop, type "settings" into the Windows search bar at the bottom left, and click to open the Settings app. Then choose System, and then Display.

  2. Scroll down to the Multiple Displays section and select Extend These Displays.

  3. Scroll back to the top. Under the Select and Rearrange Displays section, drag and drop each display to rearrange them according to their physical layout on your desktop.

Updating Firmware

  1. Download the Driver and Firmware from the Dell Product Support page.

  2. Plug in monitor 1 only.

  3. Run both the firmware and driver installers.

  4. Plug in monitor 2 only.

  5. Run only the firmware installer.

  6. Connect everything again.
