Resetting or Changing Your NetID Password
Students, staff, faculty can reset their password if they forgot it or change their NetID password if they know their current NetID password.
Password complexity guidelines
Complexity rules help you create passwords strong enough to protect your account. The following are the NetID password requirements on all newly created or changed passwords.
Minimum password length is 12 characters.
The password must contain characters from three of the following four categories:
Upper Case: A B C ...
Lower Case: a b c ...
Numbers: 1 2 3 ...
Symbols: ! @ ? ...
Reusing any of the last 10 passwords is not allowed.
Creating a password that ITS systems identify as being exposed in a data breach is not allowed.
The password must not contain 3 consecutive characters contained in your name or NetID. For example, Jonathan wouldn’t be able to use a password that contained "jon", "ona", "nat", "ath", "tha", or "han".
You can also secure your account with a “passphrase”. Passphrases are passwords that, instead of a single word, are a sentence or group of words. This is an easy way to increase the character count of a password. For more information about passphrases, see Creating a Passphrase.
Steps to take after changing your NetID password
After you change your NetID password, you may need to take some steps to regain access to certain UConn services.
Sign back into sites and services
The following services will require you to sign in again:
SSO: Used for several sites such as Student Admin, UConn Anyware, and the VPN.
Microsoft 365: Includes apps such as Outlook, Word, and OneDrive. Microsoft 365 login is also used for HuskyCT. Password changes can take up to 15 minutes to sync up to Microsoft 365.
UCONN-SECURE: Your computer will remember your old credentials until you reconnect. You may need to “forget” the network in your system settings before reconnecting.
Log back into your UConn-issued computer
If you have a computer issued by UConn, you likely sign into it using your UConn email and password. Your computer password will update to your new NetID password upon the next login when connected to the internet. If you are offline, it will still use your old password.
If your computer does not update its password after a restart and while connected to the network, reach out to your local IT support.
Update your password manager
If you use a password manager, you will want to make sure it stores your new NetID password. Some password managers may update it automatically. If you use LastPass provided by UConn, you can learn how to update the stored password here: Guide to your UConn LastPass account
