Duo Two-Factor Authentication

Duo Two-Factor Authentication

Two-factor authentication (2FA), powered by Duo Security, is required for faculty, staff, special payroll, student employees, and students. 2FA enhances data security by requiring two forms of identification to gain access to online services.

What is two factor authentication?

Two-factor authentication (2FA) protects the login process and prevents unauthorized access to your data. 2FA requires two forms of identification before access is provided. At UConn, you first log in with your NetID or email (the “first factor”) and then verify that it is you logging in by answering a prompt on your device (the “second factor”). This way, even if your credentials are stolen, you can block access by denying this second factor.

Duo Mobile is an authentication app that works with Duo Security’s two-factor authentication service. Once installed from your app store, the app will send a notification to your smartphone or tablet that allows you to authenticate.

How do I receive these prompts?

The most popular and convenient way to use 2FA is with the free Duo Mobile app. The app can be downloaded on either a tablet or smartphone. If your device does not support apps, or if you would like to receive a text instead, any mobile phone will suffice.

How often do I receive these prompts?

You will be prompted to verify each time that you log in. However, you will also be prompted to “remember” your device. If you choose to do so, you will not be prompted to verify for 30 days on that given browser on your device (e.g. Google Chrome on your iPad or Edge on your Windows PC.) You should only do this on a device that you own and do not share with other people.
