Send a Chat in Microsoft Teams

Those at UConn with an active Office 365 account may use Microsoft Teams to chat, or “instant message” others at the University.

Teams can be fully accessed in a web browser and through a desktop application. This guide will use the web app (website).

  1. Visit https://teams.microsoft.com and sign in with your UConn email address and your NetID password.

  2. Click on the Chat tab in the left-hand menu, then click on New Chat at the top.

  3. To find new users, use the search bar at the top of the screen.

  4. Begin to type the name or job title of your desired recipient.

    1. If you’d like to message more than one person, type in another name.

  5. When you’re ready to type your message, click on the text entry field at the bottom of the window.

  6. Type your message and tap on Enter on your keyboard to send it.

Example Conversation

  • Now that I have a conversation with Douglas, if I look at the top of the window I can switch between our conversation and viewing all the files we have ever sent one another.

  • Every message has a timestamp to show when it was sent.

  • I can see the last message Douglas read by looking for the eye icon next to a message of mine.

  • I can guess that he hasn’t seen my message because he’s currently in a meeting as shown by the red status icon on his profile picture.

  • I can set my own status by clicking on my own icon.

    • Teams reads my Outlook calendar and will turn red when I am in a meeting.
