Microsoft Teams

Microsoft Teams is a collaboration and productivity tool that is included with Office 365 and available to anyone at UConn with a uconn.edu email address. With Teams, you can chat with individuals or groups, hold video meetings, store and share files, and integrate with other applications. With its video conferencing features, you can connect with colleagues inside and outside the University for a one-on-one conversation or group meeting.

Faculty, staff, and students can access Teams through the Office 365 portal or by installing it on their workstations. To use Microsoft Teams, you will need to be on a computer or device that has an internet connection. 

Teams interface

Microsoft is retiring Skype for Business soon and replacing it with Microsoft Teams. When UConn upgrades the Office 365 suite, only Teams will be installed; Skype for Business will be removed. For more information about the transition, see Transitioning to Teams. 

In addition to scheduling, attending meetings, and chatting with contacts, you can collaborate with a team that you create and name. A team is a collection of people with whom you plan to have ongoing online discussions about a project or reoccurring topics. When you create a team, you start with a general channel. This can be used to send information relevant to the entire group of users that are a part of the team. You can also create new channels to discuss subtopics.

Within these channels, files can be shared, and multiple users can collaborate on the same file at the same time. Every channel has three default tabs: Conversations, Files, and Wiki.

  • The Conversations tab displays instant messages.

  • The Files tab displays documents shared within the team.

  • The Wiki tab can be used to perform tasks like taking meeting notes and drafting documents.

Supported Security and Compliance Levels

Microsoft Teams supports the following security and compliance measures:

  • ISO 27001

  • ISO 27018

  • SSAE16

  • SOC1 Type I & II

  • SOC2 Type I and II

  • HIPAA

  • FERPA

  • GLBA

  • EU Model Clause (“EUMC”) 

EUMC data is encrypted at rest and over the wire; data is stored in the data center, in the region that homes the O365 tenant.
