Shibboleth

Shibboleth functionality has been deprecated and is no longer in use at UConn. Please explore using Entra as your SSO solution for authentication at UConn moving forward.

Shibboleth was a Single Sign-On solution for web services, which utilized the universal and federated SAML 2.0 protocol. Shibboleth was able to leverage the InCommon federation, an education and research identity federation, through Internet 2. ITS' federation with InCommon allowed Shibboleth to automatically or quickly integrate with other research and educational institutions across the U.S.

The University’s Shibboleth implementation delegated authentication to CAS, providing a consistent login experience for the end user. In addition to providing authentication services, Shibboleth was able to assert identity attributes to the web service about the user who had authenticated. Those attributes included email, name, and other system identifiers such as Student Admin ID.
