Registering Wireless Devices for Internet Access

Students may need to register their wireless devices in order to connect them to the UConn network. Registered devices will be able to connect to UCONN-GUEST without needing to accept terms and conditions or to reconnect after the usual lease period expires. Device(s) should be registered each year. Each summer, or as needed, registrations for devices that have not been online longer than 30 days are purged for management purposes.

This service is intended for consumer-type devices like smart televisions or gaming consoles. Contact the Technology Support Center if you are installing industrial IoTs like thermometers, cameras, or monitoring systems, so they can advise you on the best practices.

Do I need to register my wireless device?

Not every device needs to be registered in order to connect to the UConn network. If it does not need registration, you can connect it to the UCONN-SECURE wireless network using your NetID credentials.

  • Game consoles (Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, etc.)

  • Smart TVs

  • Smart speakers (Amazon Echo, Google Home, etc.)

  • Cloud-connected smart home devices*

  • Laptops

  • Tablets

  • Desktop computers

  • Peer-to-peer smart home devices

If your smart device has an Ethernet port, it is recommended to connect it to the UConn network using a wired Ethernet connection. This will provide the fastest and most stable connection for your device. All dorms on UConn’s campuses have at least one Ethernet port for student use. If you use Ethernet for connecting to the network, you do not need to register your device.

Why are some smart home devices not supported?

Communication between devices on the UConn network is not supported. For example, a smart light bulb connected to a smart speaker may not work if the products communicate with each other directly (speaker ↔︎ light bulb).

Some devices that communicate through an online cloud service, rather than in a device-to-device fashion, may work but are not formally supported (speaker ↔︎ cloud service ↔︎ light bulb).

Smart assistants such as Amazon Echo or Google Home may work standalone, but cannot be used to control lights, sockets, or other “smart” devices, and are not formally supported.

If you are not sure what technology your smart home devices use, refer to the manufacturer’s documentation.
