Why is the data jack blocked?
ITS Network Switch Port Utilization and Audit of Unused Network Data Jacks
Information Technology Services (ITS) is upgrading telecommunications cabling and replacing end-of-life network equipment on all UConn campuses. This refresh will improve the stability and performance of the network for the University of Connecticut.
To prepare for these upgrades, ITS will first perform a network switch “port utilization audit” to determine existing data usage. This audit looks at each network switch port and determines the usage over a 12-18 month period. This will help ITS accurately design a deployment plan that meets the needs of the occupants in each building, floor, classroom, office, or lab.
Based on this assessment, ITS technicians will disconnect unused network switch ports in each Telecommunications Rooms of that building. ITS will insert a small plug into those ports, and the plugs will indicate that a jack is inactive, as opposed to broken, and it can be reactivated by contacting the Technology Support Center.
