File Storage

The University's Information Technology Services (ITS) offers different options for storing your data. Microsoft 365 cloud storage is the preferred choice for general-use storage, accommodating day-to-day files such as text documents, spreadsheets, and course materials. This cloud-based solution ensures access to your data on and off campus. Additionally, ITS provides on-site storage tailored for specific use cases.

University data must be stored in one of the locations below to be in compliance with university data standards.

General Use: Microsoft 365 Cloud Storage

These options are available to all university members:

Personal Storage

Microsoft OneDrive: Faculty, staff, and students have access to OneDrive via Microsoft 365. This cloud-hosted service is where faculty, staff and students should store their files.

Departmental Storage

Microsoft SharePoint: Faculty, staff, and students have access to SharePoint via Microsoft 365. This cloud-hosted service is where departments and groups should store files.

Specific Use: On-Site Storage

ITS offers faculty and staff a secure file storage solution hosted on the Storrs campus offering benefits of local storage when compared to cloud storage (high I/O performance for lab equipment, for example). This storage drive can be connected to your computer to function like an internal drive. Files are backed up nightly and secured by the University's firewalls.

The R: drive serves as a dedicated space for research, lab equipment data, and High-Performance Computing (HPC) needs. The files on this drive persist if an individual with access departs from the University, ensuring continuity and accessibility for ongoing projects.
