Student Access to IT Services after Leaving UConn

Student Access to IT Services after Leaving UConn

When students leave UConn, their access to key student systems will change. This article provides information about how the following services and offers recommendations for their transition.

Microsoft 365

You will lose access to your UConn Microsoft 365 account approximately 60 days after you complete your degree or when you leave UConn. You will receive an email from Information Technology Services when your 60-day clock starts and with the exact day your account will close.

Note: If you are staying at the University in another role (e.g., as an employee or graduate student), you will retain access to Microsoft 365. Employees should export their student data.

Email

When your UConn Microsoft 365 account closes, you will lose access to your university-provided email in Microsoft Outlook. Your data will be deleted, and you will not be able to send or receive email from your UConn email inbox.

  • Old messages: You should move any data stored on your Outlook account to personal storage. You can export your mailbox to an Outlook Data File (.pst). For instructions, see this article: Exporting email from Outlook (classic)

  • Email address: UConn alumni may opt into the Alumni Forwarding Service after graduation. You can have any new messages sent to your UConn email address forwarded to a personal account (non-UConn) that you choose. If you are eligible, you will receive an email with an activation code once the Registrar’s Office completes your paperwork. You must renew this forward annually.

    • ITS recommends that you do not rely on the Alumni Forwarding Service indefinitely.

    • You should update the email address on file for external accounts, like financial institutions, LinkedIn, Spotify, etc., to a personal account that you will actively check and maintain, as many email providers block their messages from being forwarded by forwarding services.

Apps and Files

You will lose access to Microsoft 365 apps (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and data stored in your OneDrive. This data will be deleted. ITS recommends that you download any files you wish to keep. You can learn how to export your OneDrive data using this guide: Export Data out of OneDrive

HuskyCT

You can continue to log in to HuskyCT, but you may no longer have access to course content. Access to old courses is dependent on the instructor. If they have left the course available to you or open it, you will be able to access it.

Courses are typically made unavailable about 4 weeks after the semester ends.

Student Administration System

What you can access and do will change. Since you aren’t active for a current or upcoming semester, you will lose the ability to register for classes and other similar functions.

Most undergraduate and graduate students can log in to Student Admin and access their transcripts and 1098-T forms for two years after they graduate or leave the University. After two years, students should contact the Registrar’s Office for assistance with transcripts.

Other services

School or department-specific services and software

Some schools and programs, such as the School of Business and College of Engineering, provide access to various services and software for students enrolled in their classes. For information about these services, reach out to the IT contact for the school, program, or department that granted you the access.

LastPass password manager

You will lose access to LastPass. Active students have access to a LastPass business account that is similar to the consumer account tier “Families,” which allows them to share their account with 5 other who will also have premium features (Families users cannot see others' passwords unless manually shared). If you have activated the optional personal account inside of your UConn business account or have activated any of the family accounts, you will need to decide how you proceed. You can pay to continue using LastPass in the Families capacity after you separate from the university, or you can reduce your service to a free LastPass account (no “family” members). It is against policy to export UConn-associated passwords along with your personal account’s passwords.

Returning to UConn in the future

If you return to UConn in the future as either a student or employee, you will regain access to relevant systems depending on your affiliation. You will receive the same NetID and email address that you previously had, but the data from your time as a student will not be preserved. If you return as an employee, you will lose eligibility for the Alumni Forwarding Service, even if you return as a student later on.
