Zoom - Web Conferencing

Zoom allows users to collaborate online but is not licensed or supported by UConn ITS. Students, faculty, and staff can use Zoom, but should understand and manage related security concerns.

As you work from different locations and in alternate ways, ITS advises that you use applications and approaches that are most familiar; wherever possible, ITS and Information Security strongly encourage the use of centrally contracted and supported software and services for University activities. These platforms have been selected specifically for use at the University, meaning they are monitored by ITS for security issues, and we are more able to provide assistance for these products when needed.

With this said, ITS does recognize the desire to use unsupported tools – particularly Zoom – rather than supported alternatives. While ITS does not advocate for the use of unsupported tools, it is not prohibited either. If you choose to employ alternative collaboration technologies like Zoom, remember it is your responsibility to ensure that it is done in a safe and responsible manner.

Using Zoom Securely

Helpful information on the secure use of Zoom can be found on the Zoom website.

ITS requests that you share this information with your constituents as needed so that they might better protect themselves. However, it should be noted that all confidential or protected institutional data must continue to be stored on University supported resources. State Guidelines Regarding Zoom

The State of Connecticut recommends that online conferencing take place via Microsoft Teams. However, in tandem with the BEST Cybersecurity team, Connecticut has issued guidelines for using Zoom conferencing software in the most secure possible fashion.
