Grading and Feedback in Ultra Course View

This article covers how to provide grading and feedback for Ultra course assessments.

For Original Course View, refer to: Giving Feedback to Students

Overview

  • When grading student submissions, instructors and TAs can input scores and provide feedback.

  • Available feedback methods include: written feedback, rubric scoring, annotations/markup, and recorded video/audio feedback.

Scores MUST be input via the attempt grading view (pictured below) for an attempt to be considered “Graded”. If grades are input via Gradebook column or the Submissions tab, the grade will be considered an “Override” and attempts will still be labeled as “Needs Grading”.

    • Assessment columns must also be visible for students to see their scores and feedback.

  1. Access student submissions by clicking the Gradebook tab.

  2. Click on Overview.

  3. Locate the assignment and click Grade Now.

  4. Click on the empty “grade pill” in the top right and input the score. Feedback can also be provided in the Overall Feedback box.

  5. Once input, the score will be visible and the grade pill’s color will change.

  6. To start grading the next student’s submission, click Next Student, or click on their name in the left side bar.

Grading Tip

  • While grading student submissions, you may prefer to maximize your window and set it to full screen.

  • While grading, opened side panels decrease the amount of visible space you may have while grading. Click on the side arrows to close the panels.

  1. Access student submissions by clicking into Gradebook.

  2. Click on Overview.

  3. Locate the assignment and click Grade Now.

  4. Click on the gray pill icon and enter a grade. Feedback can be provided by clicking the feedback icon image-20241023-174502.png

  5. To start grading the next student’s submission, click the student’s name in the top right corner.

Instructors/TAs only need to provide manual grading for tests that contain essay questions. Essay questions can be graded student by student, or question by question.

  1. Access student submissions by clicking into Gradebook.

  2. Click on Overview.

  3. Locate the assignment and click Grade Now.

  4. If “Students” is selected, grading will focus on an individual student’s submission.

    1. Locate the essay question within the test and enter a grade into the gray pill.

    2. Feedback can also be provided by clicking the feedback icon image-20241023-174502.png.

  5. If “Questions” is selected, grading will display the responses to the selected essay question.

  6. By default, Tests are set to “Post grades automatically”. This means that once essay questions are graded, students will see their scores and feedback.

For assessments that have an attached rubric, the overall score must be tabulated by selecting rubric fields for the attempt to be considered “Graded”.

  1. From the right side Grading Rubric panel, click a performance level for each criteria.

  2. Once selected, the points for that criteria will tabulate.

  3. Once all rubric criteria have been evaluated, the final score tabulation will be visible in the grading pill at the top. No other score grading needs to be done.

  4. Written Feedback can also be provided in the Overall Feedback box by minimizing the Grading Rubric.

Multiple Attempt Grading Settings

When grading an assignment with multiple attempts, the assignment settings are important in how they reflect in the Gradebook. Within the assignment click into the settings.

Under the settings it is important to note what the Attempts to Grade setting is set to.

  • First Attempt - when grading attempts, only the FIRST submission’s grade will be reflected within the gradebook column.

  • Last Attempt - when grading attempts, only the LAST submission’s grade will be reflected within the gradebook column.

  • All Attempts - when grading attempts, ALL attempts should be graded.

    • The grade reflected within the gradebook column is also determined based of the additional assessment setting--average grade, highest grade, and lowest grade.

Assignments with multiple attempts can be accessed through the attempt grading view.

  1. To begin, navigate to the Gradebook.

  2. Click on Gradable items.

  1. You will now see the gradable items page that provides information about the assignment/assessments.

  1. By clicking on the assessment name, you will be able to access the attempt grading view. Under a student submission, click on ATTEMPT #/# dropdown to view the different attempts.

  1. Clicking on the attempts dropdown will allow you to see when the student submitted each attempt.

  1. Click on a specific attempt number to change which attempt you are currently grading or reviewing.

  1. Then proceed with providing scores and feedback as needed.

Providing Feedback

Like scores, Feedback cannot be viewed by students unless the assessment grade is ‘Posted’ and the column is visible.

  • Also, a grade cannot be ‘Posted’ unless there is a score.

  • This means that students cannot view Feedback unless there is also an assessment score.

Student View

Students can access their feedback by re-entering the item through either the Course Content page or the Gradebook. The method for viewing feedback is the same for a discussion, test, or assignment. The steps below outline the student view for a test.
