Bulk Importing Groups to Ultra

This article intended for instructors looking to import groups in Ultra Course View.

Overview

  • Instructors can import:

    • A group set containing sub-groups

    • Group members into existing groups

  • Instructors should use a CSV(comma-separated values) file. It can be created in Microsoft Excel.

  • There is a specific format to create a CSV file.

  • To import group members, Students' NetIDs are required.


Step 1.1 - Setup the Group Set CSV File

  1. The first step in the process is to download the “Group Sets template” CSV from within the course.

    1. From the Groups tab, click Import Group Set.

    2. Then click Download Group Sets template.

    3. This will download a CVS template file to your computer.

    4. Once opened, you will see that the CSV has five columns. Required columns are marked with an asterisk.

  • Group Code* 

    • Group codes are unique alphanumeric identifiers used only for import purposes. Group codes provide a unique way to identify each group in case they have the same name. You can assign any group code you want. 

  • Title*

    • The name of the group within the group set.

  • Description 

    • An optional field to provide a description of the group. 

  • Group Set* 

    • Keep the group set name as ‘first_gc_ultra_gc_group_gc_set.' This name will show up in the Groups. You can change the name once you finish importing.

  • Self Enroll* 

    • Enter Y if you want students to be able to self enroll into groups; enter N if you want to assign students to groups yourself.

Step 1.2 - Adding Group Set and Groups to the Course

The next step is to add the Group Set and the Groups to your course using the CSV file created in the previous step.

  1. Return to the Groups tab, and click Import Group Set.

  2. Then, click Upload File.

     

  3. Select the CSV file you setup in the previous step, then click Import.

Create a CSV File to Assign Group members

The CSV has three columns. Required columns are marked with an asterisk.

  • Group Code* 

    • Groups codes are unique alphanumeric identifiers used only for import purposes. Group codes provide a unique way to identify each group in case they have the same name. You can assign any group you want.

    • If you already created the group set using a CSV file, keep the Group Code same for each group.

  • User Name*

    • The NetID of the student you’re assigning to a group.

  • Group Set

    • The group set name as it shows in the Groups page.

Save as a CSV file

  1. Open your Excel file.

  2. Click File on the top menu.

     

  3. on the left column, click Save As.

  4. Click the dropdown arrow for the file type options.

  5. Choose CSV (Comma delimited) (*.csv).

     

  6. Click Save.


Import Group sets

To import group sets:

  1. Navigate to your HuskyCT Ultra course.

  2. On the top navigation menu, click Groups.

     

  3. Click Import Group Set at right top corner.

     

  4. Click Upload File and select your CSV file.

     

  5. Click Import.

  6. You will get a blue text box that says ‘Large files may take longer to upload. You’ll receive a confirmation email when the upload is complete.’

     

  7. Once you get a confirmation email from Blackboard, refresh the page to check the Groups pages.


Assign Group Members

To assign group members:

  1. Navigate to your HuskyCT Ultra course.

  2. On the top navigation menu, click Groups.

     

  3. Click a group set.

     

  4. Click the Import Groups or Members icon on right top corner.

     

  5. Choose Assign members tap.

  6. Click Upload File and select your CSV file.

  7. Click Import.

  8. You will be able to check the students are assign in the groups.
