Kaltura: Tips and Tricks

This article is for students, faculty, and staff. Users can download a copy of these tips and tricks and modify as needed. 

Tools and Features Overview

With Kaltura, users can upload, create, edit, and share videos. Alternatives to Create and Edit are described below, in the section Alternatives to Using Kaltura Capture

  • Upload:
    Users can upload the videos they create.

  • Create:
    Enables users to record their screens and audio (e.g., voiceover PowerPoint presentations) using Kaltura Capture.

  • Edit:
    Once they upload a video, users can trim the beginning and the end of the video and cut from the middle with the Launch Editor feature.

  • Share:
    Users can share the video in your course in a variety of ways. You can also share it outside the course.

Remember that you may have students with accommodations that require captions. If you create videos and have a student with that accommodation, contact CSD so they can caption it for you (must be in Kaltura).

PowerPoint Presentations: Recording Your Slide Show 

If you are giving a PowerPoint presentation, you can use PowerPoint's Record Slide Show feature to create a voice-over PowerPoint recording (MP4). Alternatively, if you have Office 365 installed, you can include a video on each slide. With the Record Slide Show feature, you can also make annotations on your slides. 

  1. Click Slide Show

  2. Click Record Slide Show.

    1. If you wish to record your webcam, turn it on. If you do not, only audio will be recorded. 

    2. If you wish to record your webcam, move where it is placed on each slide so that it does not block content.

  3. Start the slide show.

    1. When you click on your last slide, the recording will stop.

    2. Click on File.

    3. Click Export. 

    4. If you are using Windows, select Create a Video and follow the steps below.

      1. Change the settings as needed. If the audio is out of sync, you may need to reduce the resolution.

      2. Click Create Video.

      3. Save the video to your computer. 

    5. If you have a Mac, select File Type: MP4 

      1. Change the settings as needed

      2. Click Export. Once the file has been created, you can upload it to Kaltura.

PowerPoint Presentations: Recording Audio for Each Slide

If you are giving a PowerPoint presentation, you can use the Record Audio feature for each slide. However, you cannot use the Annotation feature with this option.

If you choose to use the Record Audio feature, you are highly encouraged to export the PPT as a video and upload it to Kaltura. This will improve the user experience for viewers, and the uploaded video can be captioned. 

  1. Open your PowerPoint presentation.

  2. Click Insert.

  3. Click Audio. 

  4. Select Record Audio.

    1. Repeat Steps 2-4 for each PowerPoint slide. 

    2. Review all your slides.

    3. Export the file as a Video. To do so, 

      1. Click on File

      2. Click on Export. 

      3. If you have Windows, select Create a Video and follow the steps below.

        1. Change the settings as needed (if the audio is out of sync you may need to reduce the resolution).

        2. Click Create Video and save it on your computer. 

      4. If you have a Mac, select File Type: MP4 

        1. Change the settings as needed.

        2. Click Export.

      5. Once the file has been created, you can upload it to Kaltura.

  1. Click Settings.

  2. Click Control Center.

  3. Select Customize Controls. 

  4. Tap the green + sign next to Screen Recording.

  5. Swipe up from the bottom edge of any screen.

    1. On an iPad with iOS 12 or later or iPadOS, swipe down from the upper-right corner of the screen.

  6. Press deeply on the gray record icon.

  7. Tap Microphone.

  8. Tap Start Recording. You will then need to wait for the three-second countdown.

  9. Open Control Center.

  10. Tap the red record icon.

    1. Alternatively, you can:

      1. Tap the red status bar at the top of your screen.

      2. Tap Stop.

  11. Navigate to the Photos app.

  12. Select your screen recording.

  13. Transfer the recording to your computer.

  14. Upload the recording to Kaltura.

Editing

  • If you have a Mac, use iMovie to edit your videos. You can then upload them to Kaltura.

  • If you have a Windows computer, use whatever alternative application you have installed to edit videos. You can then upload them to Kaltura.

Faculty and staff can have students submit assignments as Kaltura video. To do so, 

  1. Create the assignment in HuskyCT if you have not done so already.

  2. Direct your students to click on the Assignment posting.

  3. Click Write Submission. 

  4. Click on Mashup. 

  5. Select Kaltura Media.
