Kaltura Capture Desktop Recorder

Students, faculty, and staff can record videos with Kaltura Capture. This tool is used to create recordings from your desktop and later upload them to Kaltura.

My Media can be found in HuskyCT or on the Kaltura MediaSpace page.

Instructions

  1. Navigate to kaltura.uconn.edu

  2. Click Guest to log in with your NetID.

  3. Click on your name and then My Media

  4. Click Add New in the top-right of your window.

  5. Select Kaltura Capture.

  6. Kaltura Capture will now open.

  7. Click on the Settings (gear) icon to toggle features on and off. If you do this once, you do not need to do it again unless you want to change a setting.

    1. Set "Autominimze when recording" to Yes.

      1. You must hit CTRL + S (Windows) or CMD + S (Mac) on your keyboard to pause the recording when Kaltura Capture is auto-minimized. 

    2. If you are going to record a video with audio (i.e. TedTalk), set "Record system audio" to Yes.

    3. Click Save. A menu will appear, as shown in the image below.

    4. If you do not wish to record both your computer screen and yourself (webcam) or if you do not wish to record the content from two computer monitors, turn off the second source such that the icon has a slash through it.

  8. If you select Screen for the recording, it will automatically record the entire screen. Click on the drop-down menu for the recording.

    1. Click Select Area to record selected parts of the screen only.

  9. Click Record

    1. For Windows OS, press Control + Shift + R to record. There will be a 3-second countdown, and then your recording will start.

    2. For Mac OS, press Command + Shift + R to record. There will be a 3-second countdown, and then your recording will start.

  10. When the recording begins, the duration of your recording will display in the Recording Menu

    1. If you do not minimize the Recording Menu, it will appear in your recording. To minimize it, you can either:

      1. Click the small horizontal line in the top right-hand corner of the Recording Menu widget.

      2. Turn on Autominimize when recording in the settings from Step 7a

  11. To stop recording, press the stop button (the white square in the Recording Menu).

    1. Alternatively, you can:

      1. Press Control + Shift + S for Windows OS.

      2. Press Command + Shift + S for Mac OS.

  12. You will then be prompted with a confirmation box.

    1. Click Yes, Stop it to stop the recording.

    2. Click No to continue recording.  

  13. To pause or resume your recording, click the pause/resume recording button (the red circle in the Recording Menu). 

  14. To cancel the recording, click on the cancel recording button (the grey in the Recording Menu). 

    1. Alternatively, you can either:

      1. Press Control + Shift + C for Windows OS.

      2. Press Command + Shift + C for Mac OS. 

  15. You will be prompted with a confirmation box. Press Yes, Discard to discard the recording. 

  16. After you stop your recording, you will be directed to the entry page. Enter a title, description, and tags.

  17. Click Save & Upload. You will then be able to find your recording in My Media.

  18. If there is an issue with processing the video, the features included in the latest version of Kaltura Capture will allow you to re-upload the recording. Click Manage. You will be directed to the library of recordings you have created on your computer. 

  19. To the right of the video, you will see a Re-upload button. Click it to re-upload the recording.
