Getting a BitLocker Recovery Key for an Intune-enrolled Computer

Microsoft BitLocker is a drive encryption program that is enabled on all Windows managed workstations at UConn. When BitLocker detects an unexpected change to the computer or a physical attempt to access the data by anyone other than the device owner, it will lock the drive and require a recovery key to regain access. Through a self-service process, primary users can access their recovery keys.

This process is applicable to managed devices owned by UConn. However, the process is the same for most personally owned Windows computers. If your personal device uses a Microsoft Account to sign in, you can follow these instructions as well.

Is my computer “Intune-enrolled”?

Most Dell computers purchased after January 2023 through the University PC Refresh Program are enrolled in Intune, the new device management tool utilized by ITS. If you sign into your computer with your UConn email and password, it is likely Intune-enrolled. If you use your NetID, it is probably not enrolled.

If your UConn computer is not enrolled in Intune, see this tutorial instead:

Recovery steps

Only the primary user of the computer can access the recovery key through the self-service portal. If you are not the primary user and need the recovery key (i.e. if the computer is set up for shared use), please contact the Technology Support Center or your department’s local IT support.

  1. On a separate computer, navigate to http://myapps.microsoft.com.

  2. Click on your user profile picture → View AccountManage Devices.

  3. Find your computer. It should have the same name as the service tag printed on your computer.

  4. Select View BitLocker Recovery Keys.

  5. Select Show Recovery Key. Your 48-digit recovery key will appear.

  6. Enter the recovery key into the BitLocker recovery screen on the locked computer, followed by Enter.

  7. The computer should now boot up as normal. If it does not, please contact the Technology Support Center or your department’s local IT support.
