University PC Refresh Program

ITS coordinates bulk purchases of workstations so that departments can provide their faculty and staff with up-to-date workstations. These purchases must be made by IT professionals or fiscal officers.

As of July 2024 ITS is unable to provide a stipend for devices purchased through the PC Refresh program. ITS is working to secure centralized funding for the program to restore the stipend/subsidy.

About the Program

The community is served best when technology is up-to-date. For faculty and staff, newer workstations perform better and faster, operate more reliably, and meet the requirements to run current operating systems and other software. They also help the University maintain a safe and secure IT environment because machines are equipped to run supported, fully patched software. Up-to-date workstations are better protected against security vulnerabilities that jeopardize personal information or potentially produce system-wide compromises.

To help departments replace end-of-support workstations, ITS has initiated a University PC refresh program. To assist with the expense of this program, ITS pursues a coordinated purchase to get the best practical price and will subsidize the cost for each laptop computer purchased by academic departments. ITS will also subsidize the cost of desktop computers purchased for use in student computer labs when six or more are purchased.

Advantages of the Program

  • Workstations are offered at a reduced and subsidized price (see stipend rules below)

  • ITS handles ordering, delivery, and inventory.

For areas supported by ITS…

  • PCs are delivered ready to use. Windows computers can be assigned to anyone once they are received. The first person to sign on is granted administrative rights and listed as the owner for inventory purposes.

  • ITS pushes updates and security patches to these workstations so that they remain safe and secure.

  • Workstations are delivered to employees' campus addresses.

How to Participate

ITS places orders three to four times a year, depending on supply and interest.  ITS notifies departments and colleges when they may place orders via an online form. This form lists available equipment and the prices. For additional information about the program and to inquire about participation, contact the Program Administrator.
