Difference Between Course and Non-Class Site

There are two types of “sites” in HuskyCT that faculty, staff, and students can interact with, “Courses”, and “Non-Class Sites”.

Courses

A course in Blackboard refers to any academic offering that is officially listed in PeopleSoft and imported through our standard feed process. These courses are part of the institution's curriculum and are typically associated with a specific department, semester, and instructor. Blackboard courses provide a structured learning environment where instructors can organize and deliver course content, interact with students through discussions and assignments, and track their progress.

Non-Class Sites

A non-class site in Blackboard encompasses a wide range of spaces that are not officially listed in PeopleSoft as part of the academic curriculum. These sites serve various purposes beyond traditional courses and cater to different communities within the institution. Non-class sites can include organization sites, project sites, committee sites, or special interest sites. They are designed to facilitate collaboration, information sharing, and community-building among specific groups of users. Non-class sites may provide resources, announcements, discussion boards, and document repositories to support the objectives and activities of the particular community they serve. While they may not have the same structured learning components as courses, non-class sites offer a flexible and customizable platform for fostering engagement and collaboration outside the formal academic curriculum.
