Accessible Digital Signage Guide for Videos

Creating accessible digital signage ensures all users can engage with your content. This guide focuses on adding subtitles to linked YouTube videos or Uploaded Videos via UConn Carousel Digital Signage.

You must still use captions if the video has no audio. Please use this SRT file to indicate there is no audio: This file can be uploaded to a YouTube video (Option 1) or used with the MP4 (Option 2).

Option 1: Link Video with Captions through YouTube

The video and captions reside on YouTube and would be linked through the Carousel system.

  1. Choose Your YouTube Video and Copy the Link

    1. Identify the Video: Choose the YouTube video you want to use for your digital signage.

    2. Check for Existing Captions: Determine if the video already has captions available.

    3. Copy Link: If the video already has captions available then copy the link to the video.

  2. Access UConn Carousel Digital Signage

    1. Log into UConn Carousel Digital Signage: You can log in through UConn CAS SSO or using your email and password. (You will need access to Carousel; contact Mark Uccello at mark.uccello@uconn.edu for more information.)

  3. Upload the YouTube Video with captions to Digital Signage

    1. Create New Bulletin: Click on the “New Bulletin” block at the far left of the main menu.

    2. Select the YouTube Option: In the left-hand navigation menu, click on the menu title “Dynamic.” Then select the block labeled “YouTube.”

    3. Copy and Paste YouTube Link: Under “Share URL,” paste your video link .

    4. Toggle Enable Captions: On the left of “Enable Captions” toggle the button to ensure it says “yes.”

    5. Publish the Bulletin: Click the “Publish” button in the top right corner.

Option 2: Uploading Video with Subtitles Using MP4 file and Subtitles

The video needs the captions burned into the video (open captions) before uploading it to the Carousel platform.

  1. Step 1: Create or access captions for the video

    1. Determine if the video already has subtitles available (i.e. Kaltura or YouTube). If not, upload the video to Kaltura to create subtitles for the video. Then download the subtitles from Kaltura. If the video has no audio, you must still use captions. Please use this SRT file to indicate there is no audio:

  2. Burn Captions into the MP4 Video

    1. Open Happy Scribe: Go to Hardcode subtitles on video | Happy Scribe

    2. Select your Video File: Follow the instructions on screen to select your video.

    3. Select your Subtitles file: Follow the instructions on screen to select your SRT File.

    4. Click on the “Add Subtitles” button: Add the subtitles by clicking on the “Add Subtitles” button and then download the new Video.

  3. Access UConn Carousel Digital Signage

    1. Log into UConn Carousel Digital Signage: You can log in through UConn CAS SSO or using your email and password. (You will need access to Carousel; contact Mark Uccello at mark.uccello@uconn.edu for more information.)

  4. Upload the MP4 Video with captions to Digital Signage

    1. Create New Bulletin: Click on the “New Bulletin” block at the far left of the main menu.

    2. Upload Your Video: In the left-hand navigation menu, click on the menu title “Uploaded.” Then drop your downloaded video with burned captions as shown on the screen.

    3. Publish the Bulletin: Click the “Publish” button in the top right corner.
