Students, faculty, and staff can add captions to videos in Kaltura. 

If you used a transcript to create the video, you can use Kaltura's Alignment Service to create captions. 

Captioning Individual Videos

  1. Log in to HuskyCT.

  2. Click on My Kaltura Media. Alternatively,

    1. Navigate to Mediaspace.

    2. Click Guest. 

    3. Click My Media to log in.

  3. Click on the title of the video to which you wish to add captioning.

  4. Below the video on the right-hand side, click Actions. 

  5. Select Caption and Enrich.
    (warning) Note: The “Machine captioning” option is 70% to 80% accurate and is the only option free of charge. Be sure to edit the captions after they are created so that they are ADA compliant, which is close to 99% accurate.

  6. Click Submit to confirm your selection. The captions should be added within 30 minutes. You will receive an email when they are complete.

  7. Once your captions are complete, see Edit the Captions in a Kaltura Video for instructions on how to edit them.

Captioning Multiple Videos

  1. Log in to HuskyCT.

  2. Click on My Kaltura Media. Alternatively, 

    1. Navigate to Mediaspace.

    2. Click Guest. 

    3. Click My Media to log in.

  3. Click on the box to the left of the video(s) to which you wish to add captioning.

  4. At the upper right, click Actions.

  5. Select Caption and Enrich.
    (warning) Note: The “Mechanical” option is 70% to 80% accurate and is the only option free of charge. Be sure to edit the captions after they are created so that they are ADA compliant, which is close to 99% accurate.

  6. Click on Submit to confirm your selection. The captions should be added within 30 minutes.  You will receive an email when they are complete.

If professional caption services are needed, UConn has a contract in place with 3Play Media. Follow these instructions to create an account and fill out a 3Play Media request. Then contact us to link your account to Kaltura.
