Duo two-factor authentication (2FA) at UConn is designed to be used anywhere in the world at any time. The simplest way to use 2FA for UConn services when you are outside of the United States is to download and set up the Duo Mobile app for authentication. Duo Mobile works both with or without internet access on your device and is ITS’s recommended second-factor authentication method for all situations. There are two key reasons to use the Duo Mobile app:

  • By using the Duo Mobile app, you avoid international charges for any data usage, SMS text messages, or phone calls from Duo that are delivered over international cellular networks.

  • As long as you have the same device, the app will continue to work, even if you change your phone number.

Travelers may also consider using a hardware token. These tokens never require any kind of service (cellular or internet).

New to Duo?

If you are you setting up Duo for the first time, follow the instructions for setting up a mobile phone for 2FA and installing the Duo Mobile app.

If you already set up Duo using your phone number, it is recommended that you also set up the Duo app. Follow these instructions to setup a backup device.

Switching from Text to the Duo Mobile App

If you already have Duo set up on your mobile device but did not install the app, you can return to the Device Management Portal and activate the app on a mobile phone already enrolled in the Duo service. You should go through this process before you travel and/or switch your phone number.

For additional information and tips for international numbers, see the Frequently Asked Questions about the Duo Enrollment.
