Scantron Troubleshooting

This article is for faculty who need to troubleshoot issues with Scantron.

Do you want to help shape the future of bubble sheet scanning at UConn?

ITS is piloting bubble sheet scanning through Gradescope, which may replace Scantron for bubble sheet scanning functionality in the future. Gradescope provides a more convenient scanning solution that does not require expensive and custom scan sheets, and can be managed entirely through HuskyCT.

Common Causes for Exam Sheet Rejection

  • A student filled in more than one answer for a question.

  • The instructor filled in more than one answer for a question on answer key(s).

  • The instructor failed to fill in pages 1,2, or 3 correctly.

  • There is more than one bubble filled in for a column on any type of sheet.

Common Causes for Error Message During Report Building Phase

  • The student did not fill in the test version number when there are 2 or more versions.

    • These exam sheets may be graded incorrectly using another version of the exam. Viewing the emailed reports should indicate which exam caused this error. You may need to re-grade this exam.

Paper “Skew”/Jam Errors

If an exam sheet jams or you are given a “page skew” error, grab the sheet and gently pull the paper away from the rollers with a slight side-to-side motion. This sheet will have to be re-scanned.

Common Causes for Failed Delivery of Exam Results

  • NetID is bubbled in incorrectly.

  • NetID belongs to someone else (i.e. TA scanning exam for Professor, and Professors NetID is entered).

  • NetID is invalid or does not exist.

Error Message During Emailing Phase:

Your report files are stored in a folder named “RemarkTemp” that you can access via the desktop folder shortcut shown below. Double-click to open the folder. At this point you have two options.

  1. Email these reports to yourself using Outlook.

  2. Move the files to your thumb drive.
