Troubleshooting Issues with Your Browser

Issues with your browser (e.g., Internet Explorer, Chrome, Firefox) can prevent you from accessing the Student Administration System. This article covers strategies for troubleshooting common problems. 

Log in to the Student Administration System before proceeding to the next troubleshooting strategy. 

Troubleshooting Strategies

Deleting or Clearing Browser Cache

Many users find logging out of the Student Administration System, clearing or deleting their browser cache, and logging back into Student Admin helpful. You can see how to do this in Clearing the Cache in Web Browsers.

If you are experiencing issues with a particular browser, you can also try to access and use the Student Administration System in a different browser. Doing so will help in determining if the issue is browser-specific. 

Resetting Your Student Administration System Bookmark, Favorite, or Shortcut

When you access the Student Administration System using a bookmark, favorite, or shortcut, your saved link should always be studentadmin.uconn.edu. The instructions below describe how to edit your existing saved link in Internet Explorer and Chrome.  

  1. Navigate to Tools.

  2. Click on Internet Options. 

  3. Click on the Security tab. 

  4. Select Trusted Sites

  5. Select Add. 

  6. Click on Add.

  7. Edit your saved link. The link should now read studentadmin.uconn.edu

  1. Click the Customize/Control symbol (it will look like three dots) on the far right-hand side of the browser. 

  2. Hover your mouse over the Bookmarks option. A menu will appear.

  3. Select Bookmark manager from the menu. 

  4. Right-click on your bookmark. 

  5. Select Edit. A small window will appear. 

  6. Edit your saved link. The link should now read studentadmin.uconn.edu

Missing Home Page or Incorrectly Aligned Links

  1. Right-click in the toolbar area. 

  2. Select Menu Bar

  3. Click on View. 

  4. Select Refresh. 

Editing Your Browser's Trusted Sites

The instructions below are for Internet Explorer.

  1. Navigate to Tools. 

  2. Click on Internet Options. 

  3. Click the Security tab. 

  4. Click on Trusted Sites. 

  5. Select Sites. 

  6. Click on Add.  

Checking Compatibility Settings

The instructions below are for Internet Explorer. If you are experiencing issues with Student Admin in Internet Explorer, you may find it helpful to remove the website from Compatibility View.

  1. Navigate to Tools

  2. Select Compatibility View Settings. 

  3. Check to see if uconn.edu is listed in the Websites you've added to Compatibility View box. If you see uconn.edu listed in this box, this means that the Student Administration System is currently in Compatibility View. 

    1. Click on uconn.edu, if it is already listed in the Websites you've added to Compatibility View box. 

    2. Click Remove. 

Deleting All Files from Your C:\ Drive Temp Folder

The path for your C:\ drive temp folder is C:\Users\netid\AppData\Local\Temp. When you are typing the path, you should replace the NetID in the path above with the actual NetID you used to log into your computer.

  1. Navigate to the toolbar. 

  2. Click on Edit. 

  3. Click Select All. 

  4. Select Delete to remove all files from the temp folder. 

Uninstalling and Reinstalling Java

If you do not have the most current version of Java, you need to uninstall your current version.

  1. Click Start at the bottom left-hand corner. 

  2. Select Control Panel

  3. Select the Java tab. This tab will tell you what version of Java is currently installed on your computer. 

  4. If you do not have the most current version of Java, 

    1. Click on Start from the bottom left-hand corner. 

    2. Select Control Panel

    3. Select Programs and Features. A list of all programs will appear. 

      1. Scroll until you can see all instances of Java currently installed on your computer. 

      2. Right-click on an instance of Java. 

      3. Select Uninstall. 

      4. Repeat Steps 4(ii) and 4(iii) for all instances of Java. 

    4. Once you have uninstalled Java, access the Java website to download the most current release of Java. 

Resetting Internet Explorer

Resetting Internet Explorer browser defaults may also adversely affect other applications that use Internet Explorer. You should try this troubleshooting strategy only after attempting the other strategies described above.

Resetting Internet Explorer will delete your browser favorites. To avoid losing saved links, copy your Internet Explorer favorites to your desktop.  

  1. Navigate to Tools from the browser menu bar. 

  2. Click on Options

  3. Click on the Advanced tab. 

  4. Under the Reset Internet Explorer settings section, click the Reset button. 

  5. Re-copy the backup for your favorites from the Desktop to the Favorites folder.

Internet Explorer Settings

Clearing Browser Cache

  1. Click Tools > Internet Options > General.

  2. Under Browser History, click Delete.

  3. Deselect Preserve Favorites website data.

  4. Under the Advanced tab, scroll down to the Security section and deselect Do not save encrypted pages to disk.

If 500/501 Errors Display

  1. Click Tools > Internet Options > Advanced Tab.

  2. Deselect Show friendly HTTP error messages.

  3. Deselect Use HTTP 1.1 settings.

  4. Click OK.

Safari Settings

Clearing Browser Cache

  1. Click Safari > Empty Cache > Empty.

Internet Explorer Printing

(Use when the Print button/link does not appear.)

  1. In the Edit Menu, click Select All.

  2. In the File Menu, click Print Preview.

  3. Change the “as laid out on screen” option to As selected on screen.

  4. Change Shrink to fit to 100%.

  5. Click the print icon.

Safari Printing

(Use when the Print button/link does not appear.)

  1. Click on the form to activate it.

  2. In the File Menu, click Print.

  3. Change Scale % from 100 to 150.

  4. Change Safari to Paper Handling.

  5. From Pages to Print, select Odd Only.

  6. Click Print.

Mozilla Firefox Settings

Clearing Browser Cache

  1. Click Tools > Clear Recent History.

  2. Under Time range to clear, select Everything.

  3. Select the Cookies and Cache checkboxes.

  4. Click Clear Now.
