Transitioning to OneDrive and SharePoint

ITS has transitioned UConn on-premises data storage to cloud storage. All data from users' P drives has been moved to a “PDrive” folder in their OneDrive account.

OneDrive and SharePoint are cloud file storage solutions that are part of the OneDrive ecosystem in Office 365. OneDrive is used for creating and storing personal work files while SharePoint is used to create and store files to work on with your team. Both services offer the ability to collaboratively work on Office 365 files in real time.

OneDrive and SharePoint both offer many benefits over the traditional P: and Q: network drives that are hosted on UConn’s enterprise file system. See a comparison of features here: Comparing File Storage at UConnarchived.

Migration of P: Drive Files

P Drive migration was handled by ITS at the end of 2022. No action was taken by the user.

During the transition to OneDrive, files stored on the P drive were synced to a folder in OneDrive named “PDrive” each night over the course of a week. The P drive has since been permanently deleted and shut down.

Migration of Q: Drive files

All Q Drive stewards must have a plan to migrate their data by August 1st, 2023. ITS has reached out to all stewards to initiate this conversation.

If you have not been contacted, or have questions, email sharepointmigrations@uconn.edu.

Departments are encouraged to review the following guide: Prepare your Department for SharePointarchived

Accessing OneDrive or SharePoint files

OneDrive accounts and their files will be deleted when the user leaves UConn. Student accounts are deleted when they graduate (or separate from the university). Staff/Faculty accounts are deleted at the end of employment.

Files on OneDrive and SharePoint files are accessed very similarly to how you accessed files on the P: or Q: drive.

Files can be accessed through File Explorer (on Windows) or Finder (on Macs) after you set up OneDrive or set up SharePoint.
