Shibboleth functionality is being consolidated into the CAS (Central Authentication Service) SSO solution. Application owners will be contacted to convert their applications from Shibboleth to CAS.

Shibboleth is a Single Sign-On solution for web services, which utilizes the universal and federated SAML 2.0 protocol. Shibboleth is able to leverage the InCommon federation, an education and research identity federation, through Internet 2. ITS' federation with InCommon allows Shibboleth to automatically or quickly integrate with other research and educational institutions across the U.S.

The University’s Shibboleth implementation delegates authentication to CAS, providing a constant login experience for the end user. In addition to providing authentication services, Shibboleth is able to assert identity attributes to the web service about the user who has authenticated. These attributes can include email, name, and other system identifiers such as Student Admin ID.

ITS-provided Shibboleth service consists of four servers in a highly available infrastructure.
