Item
A single column in the Gradebook that only factors in one grade, without any calculation.
Can either be manually created, or automatically created with an assignment, test, or graded Discussion.
For manually created columns, grades must be imputed by an instructor.
For columns tied to assignments, tests, or graded Discussions; grades can either be automatically. populated or for assignments that require grading, will flow to the column once the instructor enters the grades.

Text Item
A single Gradebook column that records one grade using text entries
It can only be manually created
Grades must be imputed by an instructor
Text items cannot:
be connected to other assessments
be included in gradebook calculations

Total Calculation
A single column in the Gradebook that shows a total calculation for all items within a course.
All Total Calculation columns are manually created.
Functions as an Overall Grade calculation.
Allows Instructors to view student’s overall grades using either a points or weighted system.

Calculation
A single column in the Gradebook that performs a calculation on one or more Gradebook columns.
All calculated columns are manually created.
Instructors can use Functions to build calculations and combine functions using operators.
