UConn Email Address

The University provides faculty, staff, students, and some affiliates with an official UConn email address.

When do I get my email address?

  • Faculty and staff: the morning after your NetID has been created.

  • Affiliates: the morning after your NetID has been created, only if your sponsor has requested an email address be created.

  • Graduate students: the morning after your Student Administration System record indicates you have been admitted. Graduate student NetIDs and email accounts are created on the same day.

  • Undergraduate students: mid-May for students accepted for the upcoming fall semester and mid-December for those accepted for the upcoming spring semester.

Address Format

Starting in January 2024, the format for all new addresses is NetID@uconn.edu (e.g., abc12345@uconn.edu).

You may edit your email alias by using the Pername System.

Why did ITS change the email format from name-based to NetID-based?

ITS has historically used a firstname.lastname@uconn.edu format when we issue an official UConn email address.  Historically, when users had name changes, they could change their email address to reflect the name change.

Modern systems like Microsoft 365 use email addresses for identification and login, so changing email addresses can lead to problems such as loss of access to previous account data and broken shared files.

To prevent these issues and potential data loss, university email addresses need to be as unique and unchanging as possible. NetIDs fulfill these criteria, while names can change. The goal was to significantly reduce the number of email address updates by adopting this format.

Even with the new email format, you will predominately see display names on both incoming and outgoing mail. You will also be able to search for email addresses by name. You can update your display name at any time with the Chosen Name tool on netid.uconn.edu.
