Instructor Titles

Primary Instructor (PI) – A PI is a faculty member who teaches at least 50% of the class time. There is only one primary instructor per class and section. This designation is not to be used in supplemental sections. The PI for the class should be listed as an SI in the supplemental sections when a TA is teaching the supplemental section. As PI, a SET evaluation will be assigned while as a SI on supplemental sections they will not be assigned a SET.

Secondary Instructor (SI) – An SI is a faculty member who teaches less than the majority of a course. A course with an SI must have a PI and can have multiple SIs for team-taught classes. There may be any number of secondary instructors per course and section. The PI from the primary course section should be listed as an SI in the supplemental when a TA is teaching the supplemental section. For team-taught classes, the PI as well as all SIs on a main component course (typically lectures) will pull in and be assigned a SET Evaluation. IMPORTANT: If an SI is not included with the TA on a supplemental section, the TA will NOT be evaluated.

Teaching Assistant (TA) – A graduate assistant who teaches supplemental sections. If a graduate assistant has primary teaching duties in a primary section, then they must be listed in that portion of the class as a PITA. The “TA” designation is only for supplemental sections. IMPORTANT: If an SI is not included with the TA on a supplemental section, the TA will NOT be evaluated.

Teaching Coordinator (TC) – A TC is a staff or faculty member who has NO time in front of the class. They have no teaching duties, but do have grading and roster access. Graduate assistants who grade, and do not teach, should be listed as a TC. A TC may also coordinate those who do have teaching duties or involvement in coordinating labs. (Sections listed with a TC may also have one primary and possibly one or more secondary instructor listed.)

Graduate Student Titles

PITA = Primary Instructor (PI in PeopleSoft data)

SITA = Secondary Instructor (SI in PeopleSoft data)

TA = Teaching Assistant

TC = Teaching Coordinator

NOTE: When PeopleSoft sees a PITA- it converts it to a PI, same with SITA to SI.

Primary/Supplemental Courses

Primary course section – The main section of a course under which other supplemental sections are scheduled, such as a lecture that has several discussion and lab sections.

Supplemental course section – Any section that is a subcomponent of another sections, such as a lab which is a subcomponent of a lecture.

Here are four examples which demonstrate the hierarchy of course types and how they are determined as “primary” or “supplemental” sections:

Course 1

TEST 1000 001 (LEC) - Primary

TEST 1000 001 (SEM) - Supplemental

TEST 1000 001D (DIS) - Supplemental

TEST 1000 001L (LAB) - Supplemental

Course 2

TEST 1000 001 (SEM) - Primary

TEST 1000 001D (DIS) - Supplemental

TEST 1000 001L (LAB) - Supplemental

Course 3

TEST 1000 001D (DIS) - Primary

TEST 1000 001L (LAB) - Supplemental

Course 4

TEST 1000 001L (LAB) – Primary

Note: Courses also need to have a combined enrollment of 5 or greater to receive a SET evaluation.

For regularly scheduled courses, evaluations are open to students for two weeks, closing at 11:59pm on the last day of classes. All other courses will be evaluated in the two weeks before the last scheduled day of the course (unless the course is shorter than 6 weeks, then the evaluation period will last for one week and end on the last scheduled day of the course). Enrolled students are notified by email with an invitation to complete the evaluation, then two reminders are also sent over the course of the evaluation period. Evaluations can also be accessed under the evaluations in HuskyCT.

Scenarios

Scenario 1: Multi Component Course: Faculty teaching with Grader, & Graduate Student Leads the Lab/Discussion

A faculty member is teaching the lecture component of a multi-component course. Graduate Assistants will be assigned as graders for the lecture and as lab/discussion instructors for the supplemental sections.

  • The faculty member is assigned as the Primary Instructor for the lecture and listed as a Secondary Instructor on all supplemental sections (labs/discussions). Faculty member WILL be pulled for a SET Evaluation for their role as the Primary Instructor of the lecture ONLY. S/he WILL NOT be pulled for a SET Evaluation for the supplemental sections for which they are assigned as the Secondary Instructor.

  • Graduate Assistants teaching the supplemental sections (labs/discussions) of a multi-component course, are assigned to the supplemental sections as Teaching Assistants (TA). These GAs WILL be pulled for a SET Evaluation as long as the faculty member is assigned as the Secondary Instructor on these sections.

  • A Graduate Assistant serving as a grader and having no interaction with the students taking the lecture/lab is assigned the role of Teaching Coordinator (TC). A Teaching Coordinator WILL NOT be pulled for a SET Evaluation.

    • TC will/can also serve as a member providing permission #s.

  • There should never be a PI/PITA listed on the supplemental (lab/discussion) sections.

  • If there is no grad assistant assigned to the Lecturer, all other titles remain the same.

Scenario 2: Multi Component Course: Graduate Assistant teaching with Grader, & Graduate Student Leads the Lab/Discussions

A Graduate Assistant is teaching the lecture component of a multi-component course. Graduate Assistants will also be assigned as graders for the lecture and as lab instructors for the supplemental sections.

  • The Graduate Assistant teaching the lecture is assigned as the Primary Instructor TA (PITA) for the lecture and listed as a Secondary Instructor TA (SITA) on all supplemental sections (labs/discussions). This GA WILL be pulled for a SET Evaluation for their role as the PITA of the lecture ONLY. S/he WILL NOT be pulled for a SET Evaluation for the supplemental sections for which they are assigned as the SITA.

    • TC will/can also serve as a member providing permission #s

  • There should never be a PI listed on the supplemental (lab/discussion) sections.

  • If there is no grad assistant assigned to the Lecture, all other titles remain the same.

Scenario 3: Single Component Course: Faculty teaching with Grader

A faculty member is teaching the lecture component of a single-component course. A Graduate Assistant will be assigned as a grader for the lecture.

  • The faculty member is assigned as the Primary Instructor for the lecture. They WILL be pulled for a SET Evaluation for their role as the Primary Instructor of the lecture.

  • A Graduate Assistant serving as a grader and having no interaction with the students taking the lecture, and is assigned the role of Teaching Coordinator (TC). A Teaching Coordinator WILL NOT be pulled for a SET Evaluation.

  • If there is no grader for the Lecturer, just leave this role off- all other titles remain the same.

Scenario 4: Single Component Course: Graduate Assistant teaching with Grader

A Graduate Assistant is teaching the lecture component of a single-component course. A Graduate Assistant will be assigned as a grader for the lecture.

  • The Graduate Assistant is assigned as the Primary Instructor TA for the lecture. They WILL be pulled for a SET Evaluation for their role as the Primary Instructor TA of the lecture.

  • A Graduate Assistant serving as a grader and having no interaction with the students taking the lecture is assigned the role of Teaching Coordinator (TC). A Teaching Coordinator WILL NOT be pulled for a SET Evaluation.

  • If there is no grader for the Lecture, just leave this role off- all other titles remain the same.

Scenario 5: Multi Component Course: Faculty teaching with Grader, & Graduate Student Leads the Lab/Discussion (NO SI assigned)
