If you have non-UConn data in your Google account, please move it to a personal account as soon as possible.

\uD83D\uDCD8 The Migration Process

  1. During the week of February 5th, a folder named "GDrive" will appear in your OneDrive while ITS prepares to migrate your data. Do not interact with this folder until ITS has notified you the migration is complete.

  2. Once we create this folder, ITS will migrate an initial copy of data from Google to Microsoft. Our migration tool takes a copy of the data in Google, creates a new Microsoft-compatible version, and saves the new version in your Microsoft account; no data will be deleted from Google during the migration.

After this initial migration test, we will send you a list of any files our tool cannot migrate, and why they cannot be moved. This may happen for one of two reasons:

    1. The file is larger than 15 GB, in which case you will need to download the file from Google and re-upload it to Microsoft

    2. The file path is longer than 400 characters, in which case you can shorten the folder/file name(s) and ITS will migrate the data to Microsoft in the next migration sweep.

  3. On March 4, we will begin migrating a final copy of the data from your Google Drive into the GDrive folder in your OneDrive. We will notify you when the final migration is complete, and it is safe to access the files in your GDrive folder in OneDrive. We will also notify you of any files we were unable to move automatically.

Don’t use Google…. and quota stuff

You can still access Google Workspace until April 30th. This is really so you can verify that everything transferred correctly.

Talk about links and shares?? We have an article that covers it.

  4. On April 30th, your account will be deleted from Google.

If you need to collaborate with other organizations that use Google and do not have a personal account you would like to use, you will be able to register for a new Google Workspace account using your UConn email address after April 30th.

What is the full migration process?

ITS is performing batches of an “initial migration” that will copy all of your data from your Google Drive into your OneDrive. This is a very resource-intensive and time-consuming process.

Starting March 4th, ITS will be performing a “final migration”. This second migration will only copy over files that have been altered in the time since the initial-migration.

Given the likelihood that the vast majority of files will remain unchanged after the initial migration, this method of migrating will allow the final migration to be a much shorter and less resource intensive operation. This results in a much shorter “cut-over” period. At the conclusion of the final migration, you will receive an “all clear” message from ITS and be ready to start working within OneDrive and you will no longer have access to your Google Drive.

Please visit https://its.uconn.edu/google-to-microsoft-365-transition/ for a full timeline.

Why can't I poke at my "GDrive" folder before the migration is done?

Any alterations to the “GDrive” folder or its contents before receiving the “all clear” from ITS will result in a mismatch between Google Drive and OneDrive and cause a full migration to take place again. This will slow down all migrations and create duplicate files in your OneDrive.

Please read “What is the full migration process?” above for more context.
