Communication Access Accommodations Resources
Matt Proulx
This information is being shared to the Stamford campus community event planners and organizers to ensure accessibility for participants or attendees with disabilities. Most of this information has been taken from the Office of Institutional Equity (OIE), UConn Communication Access and Interpreting Services (UCIS), or Information Technology Services (ITS). Below is some selected information pertaining to the remote streaming of events. For complete information on accessibility as it pertains to all aspects of an event, please visit OIE and UCIS.
Event planners must follow university policy and provide accommodations for people with disabilities. The Office of Institutional Equity has put together guides to help event organizers prepare for events. Please view the complete guides on their Planning Accessible Events webpage.
UConn Guidelines for Accessible Events
For those planning events, here is a guide to help work through that planning.
Accessibility Statement and Publicity / Marketing
Responding to Requests
Sign Language Interpretation and CART
UCIS provides a no-cost Communication Access Realtime Transcription (CART) service: Interpreter/CART Request Form
Emergency Procedures
When publicizing and communicating an event, make sure to clearly convey all essential details like date, time, location, as well as how a remote participant should request an accommodation. The event planner or organizer should include something like the following on every communication leading up to the event:
If you require an accommodation to fully participate in this event, please contact NAME OF PERSON at PHONE and/or EMAIL by DATE.
Please review all information provided by OEI on their UConn Guide for Accessible Events.
For a livestream event, if you are unsure about remote participant accommodation needs, then you should assume that Live Captioning for the hearing impaired is needed. If you publicized appropriately and did not receive an accommodation request for this, you can stream without Live Captioning.
Fortunately, UConn has a service for Live Captioning if needed. UCIS has a no-cost Communication Access Realtime Transcription (CART) service that can be used upon request: Request Services | UConn Communication Access and Interpreting Services
