Student Thesis Issues

Process to follow when a student reports an issue with their thesis supervisor not accepting their work.

Step-by-step guide

Under most circumstances, this will be done by Jaclyn, Anne, or Patty.

After initial contact from student:

  1. In a meeting or call with the student, gather information on the situation as the student understands it.
  2. Check in with the student's Honors advisor
    • Are they aware of the situation?
    • Do they have additional information, particularly regarding Honors standards for the department?
    • How do they want to proceed?
  3. In a meeting or call with the thesis supervisor, gather information on the situation as the faculty member understands it. As needed, explain the purpose of the thesis in terms of the student's learning and Honors experience.
  4. Promote further dialogue between student and thesis supervisor (and Honors advisor, as warranted). Offer coaching for the student.
  5. If needed, offer to join into a meeting with the student and thesis supervisor.

Note that WebEx or telephone can substitute for all instances of "meet" or "meeting."
