The transition to Windows 11 and Microsoft Intune is essential to ensuring that our systems remain secure and compliant. Unsupported or out of date operating systems are not receiving up to date security patches, leaving them susceptible to exploits, malware, and ransomware attacks that can compromise university data, research, and personal information.

The purpose of this guide is to walk you through every step of the migration process from preparation to post-migration. The goal is to keep you informed on the process and to alleviate any concerns.

Contents:

  1. Preparing for the Migration

  2. Intune Migration Process

  3. Post Migration Steps

Preparing for the Migration:

Once you have scheduled a time with BUSN IT to migrate your device, it is critically important to review the information in the Preparing for the Intune Migration document.

Because the migration will wipe clean your device of data and install a new copy of Windows 11, you will need to verify that your data is backed up, otherwise it will not be recoverable.

Steps outlined in the document include:

  • Make sure your data is backed up with OneDrive. This will speed up the reset process and ensure your documents and desktop are backed up and transferred over.

  • Make note of any Software Applications outside of Office 365 that will need to be re-installed.

  • Be available during your appointment block. While you will be leaving your device at BUSN IT for the migration, we will need you to return halfway through the setup process to sign in, to ensure proper administrative rights and configuration settings.

Reviewing the document before your appointment will help you avoid extended setup times or possible loss of data.

Please review: Preparing for the Intune Migration

Intune Migration Process (40 mins to 2 hours)

IT Device Checks (5 - 10 mins):

When you arrive to drop off your device, our staff will run a quick overview of the device with you to ensure a smooth migration. We will have a few questions regarding your data and installed software, and will double check that OneDrive is syncing, and the device has no pending files. We will also go over any questions or concerns you might have.

Intune Setup Process (15 mins - 1 hour):

We will then proceed with enrolling your device into Intune, which you do not need to be present for. This process takes anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes depending on the age of the device. We will proceed to wipe out the current OS and reinstall the latest version of Windows 11 (24H2).

It is very important to make sure your Onedrive was setup and synced prior to this step as there is no data recovery once the drive has been wiped.

After windows 11 has been installed, we will proceed with enrolling the device into Intune. This process takes a few minutes. IT staff will then confirm the device is registering properly with the University’s Intune tenant. Once IT staff has confirmed the device is properly registered, a staff member will reach out to you through your preferred contact method to return to our office and sign in to the device. For desktop computers, we will bring them back to your office at this time to complete the setup.

Machine Configuration Process (15 mins - 30 mins):

At this time, we will ask you to sign into the device. This is important as the user who signs into the device will be given administrative rights through first setup policies. The machine will then proceed to go through its remaining configurations. This process takes anywhere from 5 to 15 mins depending on Microsoft’s service status and age of the device. When completed you will be asked to sign in to the device again from the main screen. Once signed in you will be walked through the pin creation (required) and biometric sign in options (optional). More information on Windows Hello configuration can be found here: Setting up Windows Hello - Information Technology - UConn Knowledge Base.

Post Configuration Process (5 mins - 20 mins):

Once signed in we assist in configuring your OneDrive and Outlook. Our staff will then confirm your files are syncing to the new operating system configurations. We will then assist with any questions you might have and highlight any new features or changes.

Post Migration Steps:

Once you have migrated the following information will apply:

  • Your computer login credentials have changed. You will now login with your UConn email address and password. Your business credentials will only be needed for Q drive access moving forward.
  • Add your shared mailboxes and calendars. You will need to manually re-add any calendars, add-ons and mailboxes you may have had prior to the migration.
  • Familiarize yourself with Company Portal: Company Portal is where you will go to reinstall University-licensed software. We will coordinate installation of any Business School-licensed software such as SAS 9.4 Enterprise miner.

If you have any problems or need any assistance at any point in this process, please email help@business.uconn.edu. We appreciate your assistance with the process, and we hope to make the transition to Intune as smooth as possible.
