Faculty, staff, and student workers can map to the enterprise file services (EFS) departmental (Q) drive. By mapping a drive, you can access a share storage area over the network just as if that drive was a local physical hard disk drive. 

If you are Off-Campus, you must connect to the VPN before connecting to the Q Drive. Learn more: University’s VPN Client.

Mapping the Q: Drive

  1. Click on Finder > Preferences and check the “Connected Servers” checkbox.

  2. Close the Finder Preferences window.

  3. On your keyboard, hold down the command key and press the key.

  4. In the “Server Address” bar, type: smb://grove.ad.uconn.edu/efs.

  5. If you find that connecting using the above path results in folders that appear empty use this path instead: smb://files.uconn.edu/share.

  6. Click Connect.

  7.  At the credentials screen do the following:

    • Connect as → Registered User.

    • Name → erase any text in the field and replace with your NetID. 

      • If you are a student worker please connect using your work netID account (e.g., abc12345work).

    • Password → NetID Password. 

    • If you do not wish to enter your password every time you access the Q: drive, be sure to check the box labeled "Remember this password in my keychain."

  8. The EFS or Share window will pop up. Close it for now.

  9. A connected drive called "EFS" will appear on your desktop. Hold down the control key and click on the EFS drive.

  10. Click on Make Alias.

  11. An icon called "EFS alias" will appear on your desktop. Hold down the control key and click on the "EFS alias."

  12. Click on Get Info.

  13. Click on Name & Extension.

  14. Change name from "EFS alias" to "Q-drive."

  15. When you reboot your computer the "EFS" drive will not automatically reconnect, simply click on the "Q-drive" shortcut you created to re-establish the connection. 

  16. To access your Q-drive in the future, simply click on the "Q-drive" alias.
