ITS is upgrading the wireless service in many of the Storrs campus residence halls. This article provides more information about the update and how to connect to the new equipment.

Information Technology Services (ITS) is upgrading the wireless service in the North Campus residence halls.  With the goal of providing students with the highest quality experience, ITS will be placing a small, current generation wireless access point in every other room to improve wireless connectivity for all rooms.

New Wireless Access Points

To improve the performance of wireless service, ITS is installing new wireless access points in rooms in the University's residence halls. Depending on the cabling infrastructure and the configuration of the rooms, this new equipment is installed in every room or every other room over an existing jack. The new wireless access points looks like a small white box, as shown in the image below.

If your room has a new access point installed, the the ports on the old jack may be blocked. This is deliberate, and is meant to prevent further use of the old jack.

Plugging in for Wired Service

Rather than connecting your Ethernet cable to the wall jack, you will be connecting it to the new wireless access point. Plug your Ethernet cable into the bottom of the access point.

For residents of rooms that do not have a new access point, you will continue to connect to the wired network in the usual fashion--that is, by plugging one end of your Ethernet cable into the wall jack, and the other end into the Ethernet port on your computer.
