This article is for students who live in the North Campus residence halls, and will discuss upgrades to the wireless service in residence halls, in addition to the procedure for connecting to the new access points.

Overview

Information Technology Services (ITS) is upgrading the wireless service in the North Campus residence halls.  With the goal of providing students with the highest quality experience, ITS will be placing a small, current generation wireless access point in every other room to improve wireless connectivity for all rooms.

New Wireless Access Procedures

The new equipment will be installed over an existing jack and includes a wired port, located on the bottom of the device.

For residents of rooms that have a new access point, your room will instead feature a new wireless access point, installed above the existing wall jack. The device will look like a small white box, as shown in the image below.

If your room has a new access point installed, the the ports on the old jack may be blocked. This is deliberate, and is meant to prevent further use of the old jack.

Rather than connecting your Ethernet cable to the wall jack, you will be connecting it to the new wireless access point. The Ethernet port is located at the bottom of the device, and has a green tab underneath it, as shown below:

For residents of rooms that do not have a new access point, you will continue to connect to the wired network in the usual fashion--that is, by plugging one end of your Ethernet cable into the wall jack, and the other end into the Ethernet port on your computer.
