Using Snagit (Desktop Application)

EdTech Student workers may utilize Snagit to create, explain, or highlight processes in cases of guidance through email or Knowledge Base.

SnagIt is a desktop application that must be licensed and bought through TechSmith.

Snagit Overview

Snagit is a licensed program so your computer must have an installed license in order for the program to be accessible. However, Student IT Assistants will be equipped with computers that already maintain an active license.

To open SnagIt, navigate to the Windows search bar and search “SnagIt” in order to open the application.

  1. All-in-One - allows user to highlight an area and pick between capturing an image/screenshot or video.

  2. Image - allows user to capture an image/screenshot of a selected area.

  3. Video - allows user to capture a video of a selected area.

Additional Functions

Preview in Editor - allows user to highlight and mark up a video/image using shapes, textboxes, etc.

Copy to Clipboard - functions as a CTRL + C command allowing you to paste into emails or where applicable.

Capture Cursor - shows the cursor/mouse within video and image capture.

Time Delay - initiates a countdown from five seconds in which the video/image capture begins. Allows user to capture pop-up boxes that would otherwise disappear when “Capture” button is clicked.

Setup

  1. Make sure Image is selected.

  2. If edits to the screen capture must be made, i.e red boxes as depicted in the above image, Preview in Editor should be switched on.

  3. Copy to Clipboard may be switched on in order to copy and paste unedited captures.

  4. Capture Cursor is used to indicate the cursor, but is usually unnecessary.

    1. Time Delay should be switched on only if setup/prep is required to capture a pop-up menu. For example, if you right click on a desktop a pop-up menu appears. If you try and capture it using Snagit, the menu will disappear. The time delay allows you to capture that.

Capturing the Image

  1. Select Capture or create a hot-key by selecting “Print Screen” underneath the button (i.e, a key on the keyboard to initialize a screen capture without having to click the button)

  2. Drag over the area you wish to capture and you will have successfully captured an image.

    1. Note: If you would like to abandon a selected area, simply right click to exit.

If Preview in Editor is turned on, the editing screen will immediately pop up after capturing image.

The top row allows you to create elements on a capture. Arrow creates arrows, text creates text boxes, and shapes allow you to create the main highlighting element you will be utilizing.

Simply click on the shape, text, or arrow you would like to add, and drag out the shape. Once finished click Share and select either Clipboard to copy and paste, or File to save to computer.

PRO TIP: If you are prone to making mistakes, there is an undo button in the top right corner.
