This step will require the use of a smartphone and an authenticator app such as DUO

  1. Go to https://github.com/settings/security and scroll down to the bottom of the page

  2. Click Enable two-factor authentication

  3. Open the DUO app on your smartphone (or another supported authenticator app), hit Add, and hit Use QR code

  4. Scan the QR code that is displayed on your computer screen and hit Save on your smartphone

  5. Hit OK on your smartphone on the Account added! page

  6. Enter the code displayed on your smartphone in the Verify the code from the app field on your computer

  7. Click Download to save the recovery codes on your device and then click I have saved my recovery codes

ITS recommends you save these recovery codes to a secure password manager such as LastPass

At this point, two-factor authentication should now be successfully enabled on your GitHub account. When you login to your GitHub account going forward, you will be prompted to enter a passcode from the DUO or other authenticator app setup on your smartphone.
