Sharing a Kaltura Video to the Public (No Sign-in Required)

Instructors at UConn will be able to share Kaltura videos outside of HuskyCT. You first need to publish your page, and then you can get a link to the video that you can share.

Publishing Video

To publish a video, 

  1. Go to Kaltura.
  2. Click on the Guest drop down (upper right).
  3. Click Log in. You will then be prompted to login with your NetID and NetID password.
  4. The Guest field should now be replaced with your name. Click on your name.
  5. Click on My Media.

  6. Click on the check boxes next to the videos you wish to share.
  7. Click Actions in the upper right of the screen.
  8. From the drop down menu, select Publish.

  9. Select Unlisted from the publish page to allow anyone viewership for the video. Doing so will allow anyone you share the link with to view the content.

  10. Click Save to update the setting.
  11. Click the Back button.

  12. To find the link to share with others, go to your media page.
    1. Click on the video for which you wish find the link.
    2. Click Share to view the link. You will then be able to copy this link and share it with others.

Sharing Video in Discussion Boards and Other Areas

In the discussion board when a student creates a thread, they are prompted to enter text. Alternatively, students can:

  1. Click Add Content (plus sign) icon to the right.  If it's not visible, click the More/Ellipse icon to the right.

  2. Click Kaltura Media Submission.
  3. Find the video you wish to share and click Embed.
  4. Click Submit.

Attaching Kaltura Media to Your HuskyCT Assignment

Once you have recorded or uploaded media into Kaltura, you can embed it in assignments using HuskyCT’s text editor tool.

  1. Open the assignment.
  2. Select Write Submission 
  3. Click the More/Ellipse icon to the right.
  4. Click on the Add Content (plus sign) at the right.

  5. Select Kaltura Media Submission. 
  6. Once the Kaltura Media Submission window opens, click Embed on the video you want to share. The video will then appear in the text box.
  7. Click Submit. 

Downloading Media from Kaltura

Scenario 1

You do not own the Media. 

If you wish to download media from Kaltura and are not the owner of that media, 

  1. Navigate to the Kaltura MediaSpace. Alternatively,
    1. Click on the link the to a video shared with you.
    2. Skip to Step 5 in this procedure. 
  2. At the top right, click Guest → Login.
  3. Log in using your NetID credentials. The Guest label should now be changed to your name.
  4. Click on the thumbnail for the media you would like to download.
  5. Below the player, click on the Download tab.
  6. Click the blue Download text next to one of the available formats based on your preference. The content should start downloading to your computer.
    • If you do not see a download tab, contact the owner of the video and ask them to follow the guide below.
If the recording includes the webcam and the content/desktop, the download will only include the primary video.  The secondary recording will not be downloaded. See Scenario 3 for details on getting the secondary video.

Scenario 2

You do own the Media.

If you wish to download media from Kaltura and you are the owner of that media, 

  1. Navigate to the Kaltura MediaSpace.
  2. Log in using your NetID credentials.
  3. Find the media you wish to download.
  4. Click on the pencil icon at the right of the screen to edit the media.
  5. Below the player, click on the Download tab.
  6. There is one option entitled Available Formats. Within this option, select the Source File check box so that the box is checked.
  7. Click Save.
  8. To leave the edit screen and return to the viewing screen, click Return to Media (located next to the Save button). When the download tab appears, you will then be able to download the media.

Scenario 3

Downloading videos that contain webcam and screen capture.

If you wish to download both the camera and screen video, you must be the owner of the video.

  1. Follow Scenario 2 above to download the main video from Kaltura.
  2. To download the second video associated with the presentation, you will need to find the entry ID of the presentation. This can be found by the URL of the video under the "Share" tab.
  3. The entry ID will look like a random string of characters starting with "1_"
  4. Copy this string and search for it on your My Media page.
  5. You will notice two results show up, the original one you already set to download, and the second video.
  6. Follow the same steps to download the second video, as used for the primary.

Converting Your Video File to an Audio-Only File (Windows OS)

  1. After downloading your video file to your computer, open VLC Media Player
    • If you do not already have VLC Media Player installed, download it.

  2. Click on Media

  3. Select Convert/Save

    1. Alternatively, you can hit Ctrl + R on your keyboard.  

  4. Click on Add
  5. Browse and open your video file.
  6. Click on Convert/Save.
  7. Navigate to Settings. 
  8. Click on Profile. 
  9. Select Audio--MP3.
  10. Click Browse. 
  11. Name the destination file.
  12. Click Start.

Converting Your Video File to an Audio-Only File (Mac OS)

  1. After downloading your video file to your computer, open the file in QuickTime Player.
  2. Click on File.
  3. Click on Export As.
  4. Select Audio Only.
