When you submit a request for desktop support, the technician typically asks for the computer name. This information is used by our directory to index machines, remote into machines, and to keep track of inventory. It also enables us to better help you.

Below is information on how to find the computer name on a Mac and PC.

Finding the Computer Name of a Mac

You can find the name or serial number of your Mac on the informational page for your computer or by looking at the back of the device.

Format

Serial Numbers are 11-13 characters.

From the operating system

Click on the apple logo on the top left, and select "About This Mac". The serial number is the last field.

Physically

On the back of the machine, locate the label containing the serial tag. For iMac all-in-one desktops, this is underneath the stand.

Finding the Computer Name of a PC

You can find the computer name in the information about the operating system or by looking on the computer.

Format

Serial Numbers are 7 characters, ending with a 1 or 2.

From the operating system

  1. Open the start menu, and right click on "This PC" and go to properties. If there is no option for "This PC," search for it with the Windows 10 searchbar.

Shortcut

Press the Ctrl+Win+Pause keys to quickly open system information.

Windows 7 is no longer supported by Microsoft. If you are running Windows 7 on your workstation, contact the ITS Technology Support Center for assistance.

Physically

On desktops, the black tag can be found on top of the machine. On small formfactor machines and laptops, it is found on the back.
