This article provides instruction on how to format or completely erase the contents of a USB Flash Drive, it is intended for students, faculty, and staff.

Use Disk Utility app to format the drive

  1. Ensure the Flash Drive is connected to your computer.
  2. Use spotlight (the magnifying glass in the upper right-hand corner) to search for Disk Utility and open it.

  3. The drive will be listed on the sidebar under External, select it and click Erase.  
  4. You may set the new name of your Flash Drive partition, select ExFATand click Erase.

  5. When the process is complete click Done. You may now use your Flash Drive.


DO NOT disconnect the Flash Drive from the computer until the process is complete. You should always EJECT the drive before removing it. Failure to do so may lead to data corruption and/or render the drive unusable.
