This article covers what will change with your NetID, university email, and access to key student systems once your graduate or leave the University and when to expect those changes to happen.
NetID Access
Your NetID and NetID password are used to log into UConn services behind Single Sign On. You can log into these services, such as HuskyCT, as an active student. After you graduate, you remain an active student for a period time, and this is determined by when you graduate.
Graduation in May
If you graduate in May, you will be considered an active student until the 10th day of the following fall semester. For example, if you are graduating in May 2023, you will remain active until the 10th day of the Fall 2023 semester.
Graduation after May
If you graduate any time after May, you remain active until the 10th day of the fall semester of the following year. For example, if you graduate in August 2023, you can access services until the 10th day of the Fall 2024 semester.
Fail to complete your program
If you do not complete your program and do not return the following semester, you will lose access on the 10th day of the following semester. For example, you finished the Fall 2023 semester but you still need credits to graduate, your NetID will deactivate on the 10th day of the Spring 2024 semester.
Microsoft 365 and software
As a student, you have an account on Microsoft 365 and access to the apps, including Microsoft Office, within this suite. You also have the ability to download the Microsoft 365 applications on up to five University-owned or personal devices. You have access to your Office 365 account as long as your NetID remains active.
When your NetID becomes inactive, you will no longer have access to the apps and files saved within your Microsoft 365 account.
Before you become an inactive student, you must transfer data you wish to keep to a personal storage solution. Files stored in OneDrive and SharePoint will not be available after your NetID becomes inactive.
You can save them to a backup storage device or another personal cloud-hosted storage option.
Email and Google Workspace Services
Previously, alumni retained access to their UConn Google Workspace mailbox and data after they graduated. We could extend this access because Google offered educational institutions free and unlimited storage. This changed in 2022 when Google unilaterally changed their terms and conditions and moved to a fee-based model. This change, in addition to ongoing issues with offering two similar platforms, prompted the University to move Google Workspace services to Microsoft 365. This transition will occur in 2024.
All 2023-24 graduates should move any data stored on the Google Workspace account to personal storage. Google provides two tools for migrating data from your UConn Google account:
Google Transfer Tool: This tool allows you to transfer your UConn Google email and drive data to a personal Google account. Instructions are provided here: Transferring data from UConn Google account to a personal Google account
Google Takeout: Takeout can download the contents of your Google drive to your PC or transfer the data to OneDrive, Dropbox, or Box. Log in to takeout.google.com with your UConn account. Learn more by reading the first half of this guide: Migrate Google Drive to Microsoft 365
You will have the opportunity to opt in to have your University of Connecticut email address forward mail to a personal email account after graduating. Any email sent to the UConn address is automatically forwarded to this personal inbox. We will provide further communication on the availability of this forwarding service soon.
HuskyCT
Your NetID remains active after graduation, but you are listed as an “inactive student.” As you can log in with your NetID, you can access HuskyCT.
Access to old courses depends on if the instructor has left the course available or opens it for you. You can access all available resources on the Institution page.
Student Administration System
Most undergraduate and graduate students* can access their records (e.g., transcripts, tax information) as alumni by logging into Student Admin. Even when you are no longer an active student and you cannot log in to other systems, you will still use your NetID credentials to sign in to Student Admin.
*Students who attended after 2002
Your data stored in Student Admin remains there forever.
