Compressing files, folders, and programs decreases their size and reduces the amount of space they use on your computer or removable storage devices.

Compressing Files in Mac OSX 

  1. Browse to find the file or folder you wish to compress
  2. Hold down the Control key on the keyboard and click on the file or folder item
  3. Select Compress “name of file or folder” (on Mavericks, Yosemite) or Create Archive (on Mountain Lion, Lion, Snow Leopard).
  4. This will create a .zip file with the name of the file or folder that was compressed.
  5. Double-click on the .zip file to decompress it.
