Info

The header in an email precedes the message and contains routing information such as sender, recipient, date, and subject. 

Outlook 2013 and Outlook 2016

  1. Open Outlook.

  2. Double-click the email to open it in a new window.

  3. Select File.

  4. On the left-hand side, select Info.

  5. Select the Properties box.

  6. The Internet headers section will display all header information.

Outlook 2011 (Mac)

  1. Open Outlook.

  2. Right-click (or Ctrl-click) on a message in the Inbox.

  3. Select View Source.

  4. This will open the full source of the message, including headers, in a new document.

  1. Open the desired message.

  2. In the upper right-hand corner of the message, click the drop-down list next to Reply All. 

  3. In the menu that opens, click View Message Details.

  4. The header information will be in a box that opens labeled "Message Details."

Apple Mail

  1. Open Apple Mail.

  2. Select the message in the Inbox.

  3. Click View in the Menu Bar.  Select Message.

  4. Select All Headers (Long Headers in older versions of Apple Mail).

  5. This will open the full source of the message, including headers, in a new document.

  1. Open the message in your Gmail inbox.

  2. Click the three dots (ellipsis) in the top-right corner of the message.

  3. Select Show original.

  4. A new tab will open displaying all the header information.
